V-S Boys 9th; Megan Horst 36th at State

by Jim Mayhew

11/1/2008, FORT DODGE - Back to back State berths are no easy task in any team or individual sport, but the V-S cross country runners were determined that they could do it. And so the Vinton-Shellsburg Cross Country season came to a successful close at Kennedy Park on Saturday, November 1. Vinton-Shellsburg had a great fan following and the fans did their best to will the athletes to their best finish.

For the girls, Megan Horst capped off a fine junior season with a return trip to State, finishing 36th in a lightning-fast field of 128 runners with a time of 15:54. Get all of the Girls results here.

For the boys, the 2008 season was full of expectations. In a sport where every position counts and every place matters, the team pulled together with strong senior leadership and left their mark as Vinton-Shellsburg's best cross country team in school history, following up 2007's 10th place finish with a 9th place team finish for 2008.

Final results (displacement scoring) showed that Patrick Horst led the Vikings with an 11th place finish while Max Nguyen finished right behind in 12th. Wes Meyer was 52nd, Cory Mayhew 66th and Jesse Cottrell was 69th to round out the team scoring. Alex Becker was 74th overall and Matthew Pettengill was 92nd. Vinton-Shellsburg finished in 9th place with a team total of 210 points. Algona was the 3-A State Champion with 88 points.
